Our clinic is located in Downtown Kitchener and our convenient location means we truly can offer family dentistry near you. After all, proximity is certainly important to most people when they look for a new service provider, Doctor, Dentist, etc.,. But, people also conduct a large volume of searches each month for an “affordable Dentist” or an “affordable Dentist near me”. Dentistry certainly is expensive. So how do you keep costs down while maintaining sound oral health?
Family Dentistry Near You: The Function-First Approach
So, you can pay for dental care to improve function and health. You can also spend money on dentistry designed to make your teeth look or feel perfect. What do I mean by these statements? Well, examples of dentistry for function and health would include:
- Cleaning dental decay or a “cavity” and placing a dental filling to seal the area.
- Performing a root canal treatment to eliminate the bacteria causing a dental abscess.
- Repairing a tooth that broke and now allows food to trap around it.
In contrast, examples of dentistry designed to make your teeth look and feel perfect include:
- Having your Dentist provide in-office tooth bleaching.
- Having veneers placed on your front teeth.
- Placing dental filling material on stable, non-decayed wear spots on your tooth.
Now, #3 directly above may surprise you. The key is, you don’t always need to repair small tooth defects if no decay is present, the defect is not sharp and damaging nearby soft tissue (gums, cheek, tongue…), and the defect does not cause you to have pain when you eat.
When we provide Family Dentistry at our clinic, we often ask patients “does this bother you, feel sharp, or do you experience sensitivity?”. These things matter because they should dictate whether or not small wear spots and chips are repaired.
Family Dentistry Near You: Making Dentistry more affordable
So, the best way to not spend a fortune on Dental Care is to have a dental home where the “needs” and the “wants” are kept separate. You want clarity about what is necessary and what would make things nicer or better looking. You may remember the CBC Marketplace special on Dentists that aired in 2012. What they found was that there was enormous variance with respect to treatment plan costs with different Dentists across Canada. The main reason? Some Dentists were presenting cosmetic treatments as being necessary. The line between what you need to do and what you can do was not made distinct for patients.
At our office, we let you know what you need to do for proper oral health and function. Unless a patient expresses a concern with the appearance, shape, or whiteness of their teeth, we don’t broach the subject of elective cosmetic treatment options. And, why would we? Doing so makes people feel insecure and they begin to scrutinize their teeth. And when people feel insecure about their appearance, they spend more money on their appearance.
Doing only what is necessary for function and health keeps your dental expenses to a minimum. And Enamel Republic, we’re kind of “about that”!
