Dental emergencies can strike with no warning; you shouldn’t have to wait to receive relief. At Enamel Republic Family Dentistry, we offer same-day dental appointments whenever possible, including during our lunch hour, to ensure that our patients’ needs are met.
When an urgent situation occurs, our team will do everything possible to see you as soon as possible. In addition to our own office hours, we participate in the Waterloo-Wellington Dental Society’s after-hours emergency service. For both new patients and familiar faces, our goal is to make sure you always have access to care when you need it most.
Contact us today and we’ll restore you to full dental health in no time.
Our dentists treat all types of dental emergencies for patients throughout the Waterloo area. Read on for tips to begin safe treatment while you schedule your visit:

A sudden toothache or new sensitivity can signal a deeper issue that needs immediate care, such as decay, infection, or a cracked tooth. Even if it seems mild, it’s best to have an emergency dentist examine it quickly. We recommend using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste (such as Sensodyne or a hydroxyapatite-based paste) and avoiding extreme temperatures until you’re seen.
Localized swelling or a “gum boil” often means an abscess or infection. While antibiotics may temporarily alleviate symptoms, a root canal or extraction may be needed to entirely eliminate the infection. If swelling spreads toward your eye or jaw, go to the hospital immediately: you may require IV antibiotics.
A sharp wire or loose bracket can irritate cheeks and gums. Apply orthodontic wax (available at most pharmacies) to cover sharp edges and call us for a quick repair. These kinds of issues are usually quick fixes that we can complete the same day, alleviating the pain and restoring the function of your dental equipment.
For a chipped tooth, avoid chewing on the affected side and keep the area clean and dry. A simple filling or crown may be sufficient to repair the damage, but a dental examination will be necessary to confirm. If an adult tooth is knocked out, gently rinse it, place it in milk, and then bring it to our office as soon as possible. Time is critical: re-implantation within an hour gives the best chance of saving the tooth.

Common childhood injuries such as falls, sports incidents, or biting accidents can lead to cuts or swelling in the lips, cheeks, or gums. Clean the area gently and apply gentle pressure if bleeding occurs. Our pediatric care team can evaluate the injury and determine whether stitches or antibiotics are needed.

What Qualifies As a Dental Emergency?
Any issue causing pain, swelling, or infection should be considered an emergency, as minor issues can quickly escalate into more severe complications if left untreated. Broken teeth, lost fillings, abscesses, and severe sensitivity are common examples. If you’re unsure, simply call us.
Will an Emergency Dentist Extract Teeth?
If your emergency involves a severely infected or damaged tooth, a dental extraction may be necessary to relieve pain and protect the surrounding teeth. Our team is equipped for all kinds of emergency dental procedures, including extractions.
Will OHIP Cover My Emergency Dental Costs?
Many dental emergencies, including toothaches or broken fillings, aren’t covered by OHIP. However, in rare cases involving major facial trauma or jaw fractures, hospital-based care may be eligible. We follow the Ontario Dental Association Fee Guide, and you can trust us to provide clear cost estimates before treatment.
Is There an Emergency On-Call Dentist Available at Night?
Yes! The Waterloo-Wellington Dental Society runs an after-hours on-call program. If you call our office outside business hours, you’ll find the emergency on-call number on our voicemail.
How Much Are Emergency Appointments?
Emergency exams and X-rays are billed in accordance with the Ontario Fee Guide. We’ll discuss all costs before treatment and make sure you understand your options. Our priority is getting you out of pain, not adding to your stress.
What begins as minor discomfort can become a serious issue if left untreated. Whether it’s a toothache, broken filling, or gum swelling, getting care early prevents more extensive (and expensive) treatment later. At Enamel Republic Family Dentistry, we’re here to help you through any dental emergency: calmly, comfortably, and quickly.
